The upload failed

Why a slip upload is rejected or comes back with empty boxes, what to change about the photograph, and how to finish the return without uploading at all.

An upload can fail in two different ways, and they need different fixes.

The file was rejected

Hypertax accepts JPEG, PNG, HEIC and PDF, up to twenty megabytes.

  • Wrong type. A screenshot saved as something unusual, or a document from a word processor, will be refused. Export it as a PDF.
  • Too large. A multi-page scan at high resolution passes the limit quickly. Scan only the page with the slip on it, at 300 dots per inch.
  • The upload stopped part way. Usually the connection. Try again on a stronger one before you assume the file is at fault.

The file was accepted but the boxes came back empty

The image reached Hypertax and could not be read.

  • Glare from a flash wipes out whole boxes. Turn the flash off and use even light.
  • A photograph taken at an angle distorts the box grid. Hold the camera parallel to the paper.
  • A folded or creased slip breaks the lines the reader follows. Flatten it.
  • A dark or blurred photograph loses the small print. Look at your photograph and read box 1 or box 14 yourself. If you cannot read it, neither can the reader.

A partial read

Sometimes most boxes come through and one or two are blank. Fill those in by hand on the confirmation screen. There is no need to upload again.

Skip the upload

Choose "enter by hand" and type the boxes in. The return is identical, and for a slip with few filled boxes it is often faster. Read uploading a slip.
