Figures: 2026 tax year

Your Social Insurance Number

The Social Insurance Number is what identifies you to the CRA. What Hypertax accepts, how the number is stored, and how it is shown once you have entered it.

Updated 24 July 2026 · 1 min read

Every return needs a number that identifies you to the CRA. Get it wrong and the return stops.

The only number Hypertax accepts

A Social Insurance Number: nine digits, issued by Service Canada. It goes on your return and in box 12 of your T4. Hypertax accepts no other kind of tax identifier.

A SIN that starts with 9 is temporary and is issued to someone who is not a citizen or a permanent resident. It has an expiry date, and the CRA expects the number to be valid when you file.

What Hypertax does with the number

You enter it once. After that Hypertax shows only the last three digits on screen, and the full number appears only on the printed return, where the CRA requires it. Read what Hypertax stores about you.

Check it against your slip

The number on your return must match box 12 of your T4. Hypertax compares them and stops if they differ. Read your T4 is wrong.
