Why Hypertax does not e-file
Hypertax produces a paper return because NETFILE accepts only a .tax file from software the CRA has certified, and Hypertax does not hold that certification.

Every Hypertax return leaves as a PDF that you print and post. This is a limit of the product, and it is stated here rather than buried.
NETFILE needs a certified .tax file
NETFILE accepts a .tax file generated by software the CRA has certified for that tax year.
It does not accept a PDF, a photograph or an email. Certification is granted per year, per
product, after testing with the CRA. Hypertax does not hold it.
What this costs you
- Time. A posted return takes longer to assess than a transmitted one.
- Postage, and the price of printing.
- Care with the address. The right envelope matters more when there is no software routing the file.
What it does not cost you
A paper return is not worth less than an electronic one and is not treated as second class. The figures, the deadline and your rights are identical.
If e-filing matters more to you than anything else, use NETFILE-certified software instead. The CRA publishes a list of certified products, including free ones.
