Printing, signing and assembling your return
How to print a Hypertax return so the agency can process it: paper, ink, signatures, which slips to attach, and what to keep for your own records.

A posted return is read by a machine first and a person second. Printing it properly is part of filing it properly.
Printing
- Plain white paper, standard size, one side of each sheet.
- Black ink, at full size. Do not scale the pages to fit, because the position of the boxes matters to the scanner.
- Print every page of the PDF, including the schedules. Do not print a page twice.
- Check that the barcodes and the box grid came out sharp. A faint print gets rejected.
Signing
Sign in ink. An unsigned return is not a filed return, and it comes back to you. Sign and date the certification area at the end of the T1.
Attaching
Attach your T4 slips and the receipts the return asks for, in the order the T1 lists them.
Do not staple a payment to the return. Use a paper clip, or better, pay separately online.
Keep a copy
Keep the full return, the slips and the proof of posting. The CRA asks you to keep them for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.
Then address the envelope
The address is not printed on the return. Read where to mail your Canadian return.
