Your 2026 income tax and benefit return is due on 30 April 2027. That is a Friday, so it does not move.
The balance is due on the same day
Any tax you still owe for 2026 must reach the CRA by 30 April 2027 as well. Interest starts the next day. Paying and filing are separate acts: you can pay online today and post the return afterwards, as long as both happen by the deadline.
What a posted return counts as
The CRA treats a paper return as filed on the day it is postmarked, so post it early enough that the postmark falls on or before 30 April 2027. Give Canada Post several working days.
The cost of being late
The late-filing penalty is 5 per cent of your balance owing, plus 1 per cent of that balance for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months. If you were charged a late-filing penalty for 2023, 2024 or 2025, the rates for 2026 can be doubled.
If you owe nothing, there is no late-filing penalty. Filing late still delays the Canada child benefit, the GST/HST credit and any provincial payments, because the CRA recalculates them from your return.
If you are self-employed
The filing deadline is 15 June 2027, but the payment deadline is still 30 April 2027. Hypertax does not prepare returns with self-employment income.
