Credits Hypertax handles
A credit comes off the tax itself. This page lists the credits Hypertax can claim on a Canadian T1, the ones it refuses, and why a benefit is not a credit.

A credit reduces the tax you owe. A refundable credit can pay you money even when your tax is already nil. A non-refundable credit can only take your tax down to zero.
Credits Hypertax claims on a T1
- Basic personal amount, line 30000, which everyone gets.
- Base CPP contributions, line 30800, and EI premiums, line 31200.
- Canada employment amount, given automatically to anyone with employment income.
- Charitable donations, line 34900, including payroll giving from T4 box 46.
- Medical expenses, lines 33099 and 33199, above the yearly threshold.
- Your provincial or territorial credits, worked out on form 428 for your province.
Credits Hypertax does not claim
Education and tuition credits, the disability tax credit, foreign tax credits, and anything requiring a certificate the CRA must approve first. The eligibility questions ask about these before you pay, and Hypertax refuses the return rather than dropping the credit quietly.
Benefits are not credits
The Canada child benefit is paid monthly and is not claimed on the return, though filing on time is what keeps it flowing. The same is true of the GST/HST credit.
