Filing Acknowledgment
The confirmations you make before Hypertax releases your completed return, and what each of them is there for.
- Effective
- Last updated
Before Hypertax hands you a completed return, it asks you to confirm a short list of things. This page publishes that list, so you can read it now rather than for the first time at the moment you are trying to finish.
The acknowledgment
This is the exact text you will be shown. It is rendered here from the same component the download flow uses, so the two cannot drift apart.
- I have reviewed the completed return in full, including every figure on it, and the personal details — names, identification numbers, addresses and any bank details — are correct as shown.
- Every figure on the return comes from information I supplied or confirmed. Hypertax did not obtain any of it from the Canada Revenue Agency, my employer, my bank or any other source, and it did not use Auto-fill my return.
- I am responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the return I file, and for any tax, interest or penalty that results from it. Signing a return is a declaration I am making, not one Hypertax is making for me.
- I understand that Hypertax is software, not a tax professional. It is not an accounting firm, a law firm or a representative authorised to deal with the Canada Revenue Agency on my behalf, and nothing it has shown me is tax, legal or financial advice.
- I understand that Hypertax does not electronically file returns. To file, I must print the return, sign and date it, attach the required copies of my income slips, and mail it to the Canada Revenue Agency myself. Downloading the return does not file it, and the return is not filed until the CRA receives it.
- I understand what Hypertax has prepared for me: the T1 General federal return and the provincial or territorial return that goes with it — for Quebec, the TP-1, which is a separate return mailed separately to Revenu Québec. It has not prepared any self-employment, rental or investment schedule, and no prior-year return or T1-ADJ adjustment request. If I have any of those obligations, they remain undischarged and I must deal with them separately.
- I understand how AI was used: it may have read my income slip and rephrased questions, and it computed no amount on this return. Every calculated figure was produced by Hypertax's deterministic tax engine, and I have checked the figures that were read from my slip against the slip itself.
Acknowledgment text version 1.1.0-draft. The version and the statements you accept are recorded with your return.
When you are asked for it
At the point of download, after payment and after you have had the chance to review the finished return. Not at sign-up, and not buried in the terms you accepted when you created an account, because an acknowledgment given before you have seen the thing you are acknowledging is worth nothing.
You can go back and change your return afterwards. If you do, you will be asked again, because the confirmations attach to the return you are taking away, not to your account.
Why each confirmation is there
That you reviewed the return. You sign it; a tax authority holds you to what is on it. Hypertax assembles the document, but it has no way to know that the figures describe your year. Only you can look at the total and recognise it, or fail to.
That the figures came from you. Hypertax has no connection to the CRA, your employer or your bank, and it obtains nothing on your behalf — there is no Auto-fill my return here. Every number originates with something you typed or something you confirmed after it was read off a document you uploaded. Income we were never told about is not on the return.
That responsibility for the return is yours. This is not us shifting a burden onto you at the last moment; it is the ordinary legal position of anyone who signs a return, and stating it plainly is more useful than leaving you to discover it.
That Hypertax is not a tax professional. Set out in full in the not-tax-advice disclaimer. It is repeated at the point of download because that is when the temptation to assume otherwise is strongest.
That you must print and mail it. The most commonly missed fact about this product. Hypertax does not e-file. Downloading is not filing, paying is not filing, and the return is not filed until the tax authority receives the paper. See the disclaimer.
That you know what is in the box and what is not. The T1 General federal return and the provincial or territorial return that goes with it — for a Quebec resident, the TP-1, a separate return posted separately to Revenu Québec. Nothing for self-employment, rental or investment income, nothing for a prior year, and no request to adjust a return you have already filed. An obligation Hypertax did not prepare is still an obligation, with its own deadline.
That AI computed none of it. Where AI was involved — reading your slip, rephrasing a question — and where it was not, which is every calculation. The detail is in the AI-use disclosure.
What we record
When you accept, we record which statements you accepted, the version of the acknowledgment text you were shown, the time, and the return it relates to. We keep that with the return, so the record of what you were told is preserved alongside what you were given.
We do not treat your acceptance as consent to anything else. In particular it is not consent to disclose your return information to an AI vendor outside Canada, nor consent for us to use it for anything beyond preparing this return. Those are two further documents, opt-in and separate from each other because agreeing to one is not agreeing to the other, at /legal/consent. Both are still drafts, so neither is being asked of anyone yet.
If you cannot confirm one of these
Do not accept. Nothing about this is a formality, and there is no penalty for stopping.
If the reason is something Hypertax has got wrong, or something you have realised is out of scope, tell us: we would rather refund you before you download than argue about it afterwards. The rule for that is in the refund section of the terms.
